U8 and older Recreational Soccer

Recreational Soccer

Recreational soccer starts at U-8 and follows US Soccer Federation small-sided guidelines in a 4v4 format with no goal keepers. Over the next several years (U9-U12) players are gradually introduced to more field players, goalkeepers and larger fields (See chart below). Starting at U13, they play 11v11 and adhere to all of the Laws of the Game. As the players physically mature, the size of the ball and the length of the match will increase until they are playing with a full-size, #5 ball and playing 45 minute halves.

When is Registration?
Registration starts in April.

Recreational soccer is for U8 through U18, typically 2nd through 12th grade. See our age chart.

Season & Time Commitment
The Recreational soccer season is first weekend of September after Labor Day to mid-November. Rec will practice twice a week. Games are typically held on Saturdays on Mercer Island and the Eastside. However, U14 and older Boys and U15 and older Girls typically play Sundays due to field availability.

As part of their registration, Recreational soccer players receive a Mercer Island Soccer Club jersey upon registering.

Parents are responsible for the following additional equipment:

  • Shin guards (all kids MUST have shin guards to play either practice or games)
  • Black socks
  • Black shorts
  • Shoes. Cleats are preferable because they grip the wet grass and are good for lateral movement. Tennis shoes are fine however.
